Frequently asked questions
Clear answers before
you make the trip.
No fine-print scavenger hunt. Here are the practical details about service, compatibility, rates, batteries and the customer portal.
01
Getting service
01How do I request service?
Send a service request with the machine type, brand, model, and symptoms. We will review it and reply with the clearest next step. An appointment is not confirmed until you receive a reply.
02Can I request a quote online?
Yes. Start a service request and provide as much detail as possible. We review the machine and symptoms first; some faults require an inspection or diagnostic work before a versioned estimate can be prepared.
03Where are you located?
Sprocket Science operates from an appointment-only workshop in Chilliwack, British Columbia; it is not a walk-in retail storefront. We serve riders across Chilliwack and the Fraser Valley, and share exact drop-off details after service is arranged.
04Can you inspect an e-bike or e-scooter before I buy it?
Yes. The $129 Standard Condition Report documents the machine identity, visible condition, mechanical safety, accessible electrical system, operating checks, photos, findings, and recommendations. The $199 Complete Condition Report adds one controlled battery-capacity test and a linked Battery Capacity Report. It is not a regulatory certification, appraisal, warranty, guarantee of future safety, or guarantee that every hidden defect will be found. Existing faults, water ingress, corrosion, intermittent operation, or an unsafe machine may require a separate $125 Diagnostic Assessment.
05Who will work on my machine?
Sprocket Science is owner-operated. Your request goes directly to the person who reviews it, assesses the machine, explains the options, and completes the work. If the job is outside the shop’s current scope, you will get an honest answer.
02
Machines and brands
01Which machines do you work on?
The core service focus is e-bikes and e-scooters, including many rear-hub, throttle-equipped, direct-to-consumer, and less commonly supported systems. Work may include diagnostics and replacement of compatible throttles, displays, controllers, motors, PAS sensors, torque sensors, wiring, connectors, brakes, tires, tubes, chains, and other supported components. Every machine is still assessed for condition, documentation, parts availability, tooling, and safety.
02Do you assess less-supported or direct-to-consumer e-bikes?
Yes, many are welcome for assessment. Sprocket Science independently reviews rear-hub, throttle-equipped, direct-to-consumer, and less-supported machines for electrical faults and practical mechanical work. Send the brand, model, photos, and symptoms first. Factory-locked software, unsafe battery packs, incompatible parts, missing documentation, or an unsafe machine can still limit service.
03Do you service rear-hub e-bikes with throttles?
Yes. Many rear-hub and throttle-equipped e-bikes are part of the core independent service focus. Acceptance still depends on the exact machine, condition, documentation, compatible parts, available tooling, and safety, so send the brand, model, and symptoms before bringing it in.
04Which brands do you service?
Sprocket Science is an independent multi-brand shop. Serviceability depends on parts availability, documentation, proprietary tools, machine condition, and safety. Send the exact brand and model for an honest assessment.
05Do you work on KT-style systems or Bafang conversions?
Many KT-style systems and Bafang conversions can be assessed when the installed system can be identified and tested safely. Exact service depends on wiring, configuration, documentation, compatible parts, machine condition, and available tooling. No platform name is a blanket promise of serviceability.
06Does it matter where I bought my bike or scooter?
No. The machine’s design, condition, documentation, parts availability, tooling, and safety matter more than where it was purchased. Direct-to-consumer and less commonly supported brands are welcome for assessment, but no machine is accepted blindly.
07Are you an authorized dealer for every brand?
No manufacturer authorization is implied. Sprocket Science operates independently and will tell you when proprietary tools, locked parts, or manufacturer support are required.
08Can you replace parts without factory diagnostic software?
Often, yes. Factory software is not required for every repair. Sprocket Science can replace many compatible throttles, displays, controllers, motors, PAS sensors, torque sensors, brakes, tires, tubes, chains, wiring, connectors, and other accessible components. Final serviceability depends on compatibility, safe access, parts availability, and whether the replacement requires proprietary programming or calibration.
09Do you bleed brakes, repair flats, and replace chains?
Yes. Supported mechanical work includes hydraulic brake bleeding, brake adjustment, pad and rotor replacement, flat and puncture repair, compatible tube and tire replacement, chain wear measurement, chain replacement, and supported drivetrain or shifting adjustment. Machine condition, component compatibility, parts availability, and safety determine final acceptance.

Diagnostics and estimates
01How much does diagnostic testing cost?
The diagnostic assessment is a flat $125 CAD fee for an accepted, serviceable e-bike or e-scooter. It is paid after serviceability is confirmed and before the machine enters diagnostic intake. It covers diagnostic testing, documented findings, and a clear recommended next step; it is not billed by the hour. We contact you with the findings before any repair labour or parts begin. If you decline the repair, you may pick up the machine with the findings. The fee is separate from repair labour and parts and is not credited toward an approved repair.
02Why start with diagnostics?
Electrical mobility systems combine mechanical parts, sensors, wiring, controllers, software, and power components. Testing the system first reduces guesswork and avoids recommending the wrong part.
03Will work begin before I approve it?
No. After the diagnostic assessment, we contact you with the findings and recommended next step. Repair labour and parts begin only after you approve them. If you decline the repair, you may pick up the machine with the diagnostic findings.
04Do you provide firmware updates?
Not as a standard service. Firmware updates and proprietary software work require manufacturer-specific authorized tools that Sprocket Science does not currently have for many brands. We may identify when firmware appears relevant, but locked-system updates must be completed by an appropriately authorized dealer.
05Can you run Bosch, Giant, or Shimano factory diagnostics?
Not currently. Sprocket Science does not yet have the proprietary factory software required for Bosch, Giant, or Shimano electronic diagnostics, firmware updates, or locked-system service. That does not automatically rule out brake work or replacement of compatible components that do not require proprietary programming. We will confirm the boundary before accepting the work.

Batteries and safety
01Do you rebuild or repair lithium battery packs?
No. Sprocket Science does not open, rebuild, modify, spot-weld, or repair lithium battery packs.
02What battery help can you provide?
We can inspect external condition and perform controlled discharge testing to measure usable Ah, Wh, discharge time, and voltage behaviour. When the original manufacturer rating is known, the report can compare measured capacity with that nominal rating. Compatible conventional chargers can also be tested under a controlled load. This is not cell-level analysis, an exact remaining-life prediction, a battery safety certification, or a guarantee of future performance. Battery packs remain sealed and are not repaired or rebuilt.
03Does Rain-Ready make my e-bike or e-scooter waterproof?
No. Rain-Ready Electrical Protection inspects accessible connectors, charge ports, cable entries, seals, grommets, wiring and corrosion risk, then applies appropriate serviceable moisture protection where the machine design allows. It does not make a machine waterproof, change the manufacturer’s IP rating, guarantee against future water damage, open a battery pack, or repair an existing electrical fault. Existing corrosion, charging trouble, intermittent operation or water damage may require a separately approved diagnostic or repair.
