A seated scooter, heavy device or high-powered machine does not inherit pilot permissions because it is sold as a scooter.

The machine

  • Standing platform, steering handlebars and no seat, enclosure or pedals.
  • One to four wheels, each no larger than 430 mm.
  • No more than 500 W total continuous output, 25 km/h capability or 45 kg unladen.
  • Motor stops when the accelerator is released or a brake is applied.
  • Brakes stop the scooter from 25 km/h within 7.5 m on a clean, level paved surface.
  • Bell or horn, covered terminals, secure battery and required night lights.

The rider

  • Must be at least 16.
  • Approved bicycle helmet required.
  • Stand on the platform and keep at least one hand on the handlebars.
  • No passengers, towing, riding abreast, impairment or electronic-device distraction.
  • Sound the bell or horn when approaching or passing.
  • Use turn and stop signals and follow the prescribed left-turn procedure.

The route

  • On roads at 50 km/h or less, use the cycle lane when present.
  • Above 50 km/h, use is limited to an available permitted cycle lane or specifically authorized area.
  • No sidewalks or crosswalks unless signage allows them.
  • Participating communities can add route and path conditions.
  • Outside municipalities, operation is generally restricted to qualifying cycle lanes.
  • Collision duties apply.
