Identify the class

Light e-bike or standard e-bike?

Pedals are only one requirement. Age, throttle, power, speed, wheels, brakes and motor cut-off behaviour all matter.

A qualifying e-bike must remain inside its class requirements while being operated on a highway.

The machine

  • Fully operable pedals or hand cranks—even while the motor is engaged.
  • No combustion engine, and total continuous motor output within the class limit.
  • Two or three wheels at least 350 mm in diameter.
  • Brakes on every ground-contact wheel or every axle.
  • Battery and drive system securely mounted; electrical terminals covered.
  • Motor power stops as required when input ends and whenever a brake is applied.

The rider

  • Minimum age 14 for a qualifying light e-bike; 16 for a standard e-bike.
  • Approved bicycle helmet for rider and passenger, subject to narrow legal exemptions.
  • Obey traffic signals, signs and the same general road duties as drivers.
  • Ride single file, keep at least one hand on the handlebars and signal movements.
  • Do not ride impaired, distracted or without due care.
  • Carry only passengers the cycle is designed for; riders under 16 cannot carry or tow passengers.

The road

  • Ride as near as practicable to the right unless a sign or traffic control directs otherwise.
  • No sidewalk or crosswalk riding unless local bylaw or signage authorizes it.
  • At night: white front lamp, red rear lamp and approved red rear reflector.
  • Do not use a highway where signs prohibit cycles.
  • Stop after a collision and provide or report information when required.
  • Trail and park access is separate: check the land manager and posted class restrictions.
