E-Bike Motor Repair
from diagnosis to a practical fix.

Hub-motor diagnosis, supported internal mechanical service, motor-cable repair, sensor troubleshooting, and compatible motor replacement.

Three worn planetary gears removed from a serviceable e-bike hub motor at Sprocket Science

Independent diagnostics-first service

A noisy or non-running motor does not always need complete replacement.

The fault may be outside the motor, in its cable or connector, in Hall-sensor feedback, or in serviceable internal mechanical parts. Sprocket Science tests the complete drive path first, then explains whether a supported internal repair, cable repair, compatible replacement, or referral makes sense.

Common reasons riders contact us

Start with what the machine is doing.

You do not need to name the failed part. Symptoms, timing, error codes, and photos are more useful starting points.

  • Motor spins, grinds, clicks, or slips under load
  • Motor cuts out, stutters, or will not start
  • Motor cable or axle-exit wiring is damaged
  • Hall-sensor, phase-wire, or connector fault is suspected
  • Rear hub turns but no longer drives the wheel correctly
  • A compatible replacement motor needs installation

Service capabilities

Electrical thinking. Practical mechanical work.

Motor-system diagnosis

  • Power-path, controller-output, connector, and accessible wiring checks
  • Hub-motor phase-wire and Hall-sensor troubleshooting where supportable
  • Motor-cable, axle-exit, strain-relief, and connector inspection
  • Evidence-based separation of motor, controller, sensor, and wiring faults

Supported motor repair

  • Internal geared-hub inspection where the motor is safely serviceable
  • Compatible planetary gear or bearing replacement where parts and procedures support it
  • Accessible motor-cable, connector, and supported solder repair
  • Reassembly, wheel installation, cable routing, and controlled function checks

Compatible replacement

  • Like-for-like hub-motor or supported drive-unit replacement
  • Wheel, rotor, freewheel or cassette, and axle-hardware transfer where compatible
  • Connector and controller compatibility review before installation
  • Final brake alignment, wheel security, and powered operating check

Clear boundaries

Many machines welcome. No blanket promises.

  • Not every motor can be opened or repaired economically. Sealed, damaged, proprietary, unavailable, or undocumented assemblies may require complete replacement or referral.
  • Motor rewinding, unsafe performance modification, speed-limit bypassing, and manufacturer-locked programming are not offered.
  • Lithium battery packs are not opened, rebuilt, modified, spot-welded, or repaired.
  • Repair labour, internal parts, replacement motors, wheel components, and additional approved work are separate from the diagnostic assessment.
